Philadelphia 76ers center Samuel Dalembert even stopped by the protests for 10 minutes to learn more about the issue, and posed with protestors to say no to foie gras!

HLP aided with the rescue and transport of Abner, a 200 pound pig rescued from Rutgers University agricultural program. HLP was called to a backyard farm in New Jersey yesterday by the owner's daughter, and upon arriving found 17 chickens packed away inside a small shed the size of a closet with inches of feces lining the ground, no working window and almost no light. The geese were living in a trash-littered, muddy yard. All 20 animals have been brought to Farm Sanctuary to live out the rest of their lives in peace.

TirNaNog manager Ken Merriman stated he had planned on taking foie gras off the menu at the end of the spring and still intends on doing so. No word on whether the item will return to the menu in the fall. If it does, we will be back outside Tir Na Nog's doors.

During our All Out For The Ducks day of demos, three more restaurants gave us their word that they are not currently serving foie gras and do not plan on serving it in the future. All three of these had served foie gras in recent years, two as recently as the fall. We hope that all three keep their word, otherwise we will back at their doorstep! These three restaurants are Tria, Snackbar, and Caffe Casta Diva.

HLP is excited to announce the expansion of our Veg Starter Kit Stands into New Jersey, with fivestands set up in the Trenton-Princeton-New Brunswick area, to be maintained by a HLP volunteer! We also added two new stands in Philadelphia, and now have set up a total of 36 stands in PA, NJ, and MD (MD stands maintained by our friends at the Baltimore Animal Rights Coalition).

Twenty21 informed HLP that the restaurant will not be serving foie gras in the future, even though it had served the dish numerous times in the past including in previous months. Congratulations on Twenty21 for no longer supporting the massive, corporate-owned Hudson Valley Foie Gras farm, which not only abuses animals but pollutes the Delaware Riverway as well (click here for more info on HVFG pollution).

A bitter cold day did not stop two HLP volunteers from reaching lots of supportive and interested students at U-ARTS on South Broad St.!

>>> Feb 19: Foie Gras off the Menu at Susanna Foo.

At a meeting with HLP, Susanna Foo's manager stated that he agrees that foie gras is unethical, that foie gras had been removed from the menu as protests began and kept off the menu, and that foie will likely stay off the menu in the future. While the restaurant could not promise that foie gras will never be served at Susanna Foo in the future, such as at special events, we have put a moratorium on protests in hopes that the restaurant does indeed keep foie gras off the menu as they suggested they would. Kudos to the management of Susanna Foo for removing this cruel item from their menu!

Back again for demos outside of Tir Na Nog, Susanna Foo, and Matyson restaurants for their sale of foie gras! We will keep coming back and shaming these restaurants for selling foie gras until they make the right decision and boot it from the menu.

Tonight activists protested both Susanna Foo and newcomer Tir Na Nog Irish Pub and Grill for their sale of foie gras - both have been including foie on the menu, and need to see that the public will not stand for this!

500 leaflets distributed today to students at Villanova.

>>> Feb 6: Patou, Bistro St. Tropez, and Bleu Martini Restaurants: Now Foie Gras-Free!

A Manager at Patou restaurant informed HLP that the restaurant and its sister establishment Bistro St. Tropez are no longer and will not in the future be serving foie gras. Both restaurants had served the dish in recent years. Meanwhile, a manger at Bleu Martini informed HLP that the restaurant has not recently and will not in the future be serving foie gras (though it had in years past). Congratulations to these restaurants for making the right decision on foie gras!

Red Sky's manager informed HLP today that the Red Sky has stopped selling foie gras and does not plan on serving it in the future. Kudos to Red Sky for making the ethical decision!

HLP is happy to announce that it has now doubled its number of Veg Starter Kit Stands by adding 12 new stands across the city and in the suburbs! We hope and anticipate that this will significantly increase the number of VSKs we distribute in 2008 (we distributed 35,000 in 2007).

Little Fish restaurant, which has served foie gras in the past year and was listed as a participant in the "Freedom Foie for Five" publicity stunt in October, informed Professionals Against Foie Gras via phone that they have stopped serving the dish, that they will not be serving it in the future, and that it has "no place on [their] menu." Kudos to Little Fish for making the right decision on foie gras!

Two HLP volunteers conducted humane education classes on the cruelty of factory farming to five classes at a South Philadelphia grade school. As always, the students were very receptive and, though young, had a natural sense of injustice at the way animals are mistreated.
