Bob Barker Donated A Million Dollars - Now It's Time to Do Your Part To Stop Animal Cruelty in PA!
TV legend Bob Barker made headlines a few days ago by announcing he is donating $1 million dollars to help put an end to live bird shoots in Pennsylvania! The Humane Society with the help of the Humane League of Philadelphia and others has been working to pass legislation that would finally ban these cruel shoots (practiced only in our state) but the bill is being held up in the state legislature. There are two key congressmen who really need to hear from all of us on this bill: Senator Dominic Pileggi and Representative Todd Eachus. Please take a moment to contact each of these men and ask them to support the bill to ban live bird shoots!
*** Please call Senator Dominic Pileggi at 610-358-5183 and ask him to support Senate Bill 843 to stop live pigeon shoots
*** Please also call Representative Todd A. Eachus at 570-450-7905 and ask him to support House Bill 1411 to stop live pigeon shoots
Thank you for making these calls - the Senator and Representative are in their offices today and need to hear from you!
Animal-Friendly Media: Lots of Healthy Vegans!
January saw an influx of articles in the Philadelphia media about the benefits of vegan and vegetarian eating.
Humane League member and local Animal Law Professor Dara Lovitz was featured in this great article in the Philadelphia Daily News on the health benefits of a veg diet.
Humane League member, Team Vegan Philly member, and vegan triathlete Jen Clark was spotlighted in another great article in Philly Fit Magazine, written by HLP's own Sally Andersen.
Lastly, Philly Fit's most recent issue also featured a great article about vegetarian dogs. A vegetarian diet has many health benefits for dogs (not to mention for the chickens, cows, and pigs that don't want to be eaten)! You can read the article here.
This Month, Get to Know Your Companion Animal A Little Better!
HLP Member Jennifer Dickman is an Animal Communicator who writes the "Ask Your Pet" animal communication column for Wisdom Magazine. Through an animal communication session, Jennifer can help you get to know your companion animals better, gain insight into behaviors and health concerns, help animals get along better, and contact companion animals on the other side. Jennifer also provides services for people, including intuitive counseling, Reiki sessions, and private Reiki certification classes.
Throughout the month of February Jennifer will be donating $5 for every session to the Humane League, so there's never been a better time to get to know your animal a little better! For more information please click here or contact Jennifer at Jennifer_Dickman@ymail.com or 215-817-0833. As one customer put it, "I have personally observed an extremely ill cat receive tremendous relief...and I have witnessed an improvement in relationship between two of my cats after just one communication/reiki session. We owe it to our animals, and to our relationships with our animals, to schedule a session with Jennifer."
The Vegan Valentine's Dance and Drinks Is Getting Hotter!
Dozens of other vegetarians and vegans from the area have already RSVPed for the Humane League's first ever Vegan Valentine's Dance and Drinks! Will you come join us to dance, party, and have a good time all while benefiting animals? The event is happening 8 pm to midnight on Saturday February 13 at the Dark Horse Pub near 2nd and South Sts. in Center City Philadelphia. There will be a DJ and dancing all night long plus drink specials just for us and tasty vegan appetizers for sale. The cover charge is just $10, which gets you the great drink specials all night long and with all proceeds going to benefit the Humane League's life-saving work for animals. This will be a great event to take that special someone to, an opportunity to meet that special someone (because we're doing wide-ranging promotions of the event to vegetarians on dating sites and elsewhere), and also a great opportunity to just hang out with friends, drink and shake your booty!
No RSVP is required (but you can RSVP via Facebook if you want), and all of the details are online at http://www.VeganValentine.info . We hope to see you there!
