The Humane League's Elissa Katz Discusses Shocking Animal Cruelty Video on NBC News
In a special NBC -10 Investigation, Humane League Development Director Elissa Katz discussed the ongoing illegal live bird shoot in Berks County, PA and showed shocking video taken by animal activists at a recent shoot sponsored by the Philadelphia Gun Club. Pennsylvania is currently the only state in the country that openly hosts live bird shoots, which have already been banned in many other states. Legislation to ban pigeon shoots here has been held up in the state legislature since the summer.
Please click here to see the shocking video and leave your comments for NBC to thank them for covering this important issue. Then, please click here to find contact information for your state senator and representative so that you can mention the NBC story to him or her and ask for their support in banning this cruel practice. Humane League Holiday Party A Smashing Success - Thank You To All Who Attended!
Over 215 Humane League members, supporters, and friends piled into the Philadelphia Ethical Society Building on December 12 to celebrate another year of life-saving work for animals! Thanks to all who attended for your involvement and support over 2009 - we hope you'll continue working with us in 2010 to have an even bigger impact for animals! Thanks also to our special and VIP guests, our speakers Mike DuDell and Jonathan Balcombe, DJ QiCommand, our volunteers who helped with set-up and clean-up, and the many companies and individuals who donated items for our raffle and silent auction. For a slideshow of photos from this year's party, please click here. We look forward to partying with all of you again next December!
It's 2010 - How Will You Help Animals This Year?
Can we suggest one more New Year's resolution to add to your list? Please work with the Humane League in 2010 to help create a more compassionate society, to save the lives of many animals, and to reduce the suffering of many more! Through 1-2 hours of volunteer work per week over the course of 2010, YOU can spare over 1,000 animals a lifetime of suffering on factory farms! Throughout the year we'll be posting about public events and specific volunteer opportunities to get involved with our outreach, education, campaigns, and fundraising. But for now, here are some of the most effective (and easy) ongoing volunteer opportunities we encourage you to get involved with. If any of these are of interest to you, please email our volunteer coordinator Lydia Chaudhry
( lydia@thehumaneleague.com ) for more details!
Leafleting Outreach - help us distribute booklets on factory farming and vegetarianism throughout the region!
MySpace Outreach - join us in reaching tens of thousands of young adults each month on MySpace to share the realities of factory farming and provide info on going veg!
Cage-Free Campaign - are you a student or employee at a university or college that has not yet gone cage-free? Please get in touch to help us launch a cage-free campaign at your school!
Healthy Food in Healthcare Campaign - do you work at a hospital in the region? If so, please contact us about a new campaign we are working on to promote reduced meat consumption in hospitals as part of the national "Healthy Food in Health Care" initiative!
Humane Education - have a connection at a high school, college, or grade school that might be interested in having the Humane League come to present its free humane education program? Let us know!
Veg Starter Kit Outreach - help us put Veg Starter Kits in the hands of hundreds more people through just a few minutes of online work per day!
If any of these are of interest to you, please email our volunteer coordinator Lydia Chaudhry ( lydia@thehumaneleague.com ) for more details!
