The Humane League of Philadelphia E-Newsletter

Announcing: SpayNeuterPhilly.com and The Spay/Neuter Hotline!

The Humane League of Philadelphia is excited to announce today's launch of SpayNeuterPhilly.com and The Spay/Neuter Hotline in an effort to reduce the euthanasia rates of companion animals in Philadelphia and surrounding counties. Each year over 10,000 cats, dogs, and other animals are killed in Philadelphia alone due to animal overpopulation and overbreeding.

SpayNeuterPhilly.com is an exhaustive directory of low cost spay and neuter services located around the greater Philadelphia region, featuring in-depth profiles on over 50 vet clinics and an easy to use database searchable by cost or by location. The Spay/Neuter Hotline - (215) 486-2005 - will field calls and provide local residents with information on where and how to take advantage of the different low-cost spay and neuter services offered in their area. HLP would like to extend a special and major thank you to HLP volunteer Shane Bair for all of his work designing the site and database, and Audrey Ziff for extensively researching information and content for the site.

In the coming months, The Humane Society of the United States intends to launch a city-wide advertising campaign promoting the website and hotline and encouraging the public to spay or neuter their companion animals. Please share this great new resource with friends and family members and remind them that spaying and neutering saves lives! www.SpayNeuterPhilly.com

HLP Seeking Hospital Staff and a Computer Projector

Do you work in a hospital in the greater Philadelphia area other than Jefferson and Coooper Hospitals? If so, we'd like to talk to you about an exciting new veg outreach campaign we're initiating with local hospitals to see if you might be able to connect us with the appropriate administrators or staff at your hospital.

On an unrelated note, HLP is also seeking a computer projector for use in our humane education programs. If you or your employer has one that is no longer use, please consider making a tax-deductible property donation to help us with our educational outreach and help us conserve funds!

For either issue, please email us at info@thehumaneleague.com. Thanks!

Animal Friendly Lifestyle:  Two Great Lectures, and A Few Great Pizzas

Tuesday, Nov. 10: Award-winning author Jonathan Safran Foer Discusses His New Book, "Eating Animals."

Best-selling author Jonathan Foer's just-released and already acclaimed book "Eating Animals" is part investigation, part memoir, and part philosophy. Foer discusses his investigations into the treatment of farmed animals, and he and his wife's decision to commit firmly to vegetarianism and to raise their young child a vegetarian. Working from the same premise as Michael Pollan, Foer's conclusion is markedly different:  that in the modern age where healthy animal-free options aboud, the proper moral decision is to avoid cruelty and slaughter and choose vegetarianism.

Jonathan Safran Foer will be discussing his new book at a free event at the Philadelphia Central Library, 1901 Vine St., at 7:30 pm on Tuesday November 10th.

Wednesday, Nov. 11: Philadelphia Local Dynise Balcavage on her New Cookbook, "The Urban Vegan."
